This weekend, February 13-15, we will be tabling at Boskone 63, at the Westin Boston Seaport District, Boston, Massachusetts. Tabling hours will be 4-8 Friday, 10-6 Saturday, and 10-3 Sunday. To make up for the sick day at Arisia, we will be debuting four new titles, creek don't rise! All of them are short stories, and two of them contain all-new material available nowhere else (yet): Sacrificial Stories of the Neverwas, a collection of imaginary folk takes on the nature of sacrifice, and Kayfabe in the Coliseum, a pseudo Greco-Roman tale of prizefighting and metanarrative.

The other two are a zine version of Crazy Boys Get Money (with an illustration I'm proud of!) and Time is a Mobius Strip, which is a compilation of two short stories, "Ana, Chronistic", and "Chrone," originally published in Flights of Reality under the name "Better Luck Next Time."

All of the stories have been edited for print. Hope to see you there!

EDIT from Rogan: Just realized this I guess makes Crazy Boys Get Money a Valentine's Day debut. Well, maybe it's happier than Red Roses, Old Horses?

Mori: we are still plugging away at Thunder Shaman: Making History With Mapuche Spirits in Chile and Patagonia by Ana Mariella Bacigalupo. It’s super interesting and opening our mind in all sorts of cool new ways, but it’s really dense and about a people we had never known about prior, who have a vastly different cultural context, so we have to take constant breaks to just think about it. (Also this book really could’ve used a glossary; we’ve had to handwrite our own in the blank pages and have filled two already.)

The chapter we are on now talks about Mapuche ideas of text and books as ritual objects, and written law and documentation as sorcery to be countered and appropriated. And at first I went “what?” But then I thought about how the legal disability system controls the romantic relationships, job potential, and finances of those it identifies, how it fucks with the heads of those under it, and I went, “hey, you know... where’s the lie?” There’s a lot of talk about subverting the colonial legal system as acts of countersorcery, how the Mapuche make their own counterhistories not recognized by the state, and it got me thinking about how we’ve used story ourself.

Even as it was happening to us as kids, large swathes (the most IMPORTANT swathes) of our life was deemed “not real.” The concept of reality, objective fact, was used as a tool to control and harm us: crazy child can’t be trusted! And if it ever became our word against our attacker’s, we insta-lost because of who we were, no matter the circumstance. Sorcery indeed!

We couldn’t say directly what happened or was happening to us, because then we’d get caught and it’d get erased. But we could make our own twist on being unbelievable narrators: we could write fiction! And we could imbue it with all the shadow narrative of our truth that we could, interspersed with loads of nonsense, distraction, and noise, so nobody would suspect. We were, to the best of our ability, keeping our own history safe for our future selves. Though lots of sifting and salt is required, we still rely on those shadow histories today for records work! We have found ways not only to hang onto our “fake” history, but to spread it around so other people can use it and hang onto it too! So many of our comics and zines are just us trying to keep our life from getting derealized out from under us again!

And much like how the Mapuche aren’t above trying to use the legal system and its documents to their own purpose, we too use “real” records: dated photos, medical records, school calendars and report cards, etc.

We never considered this a battle of sorceries, but it’s a fascinating new lens with which to look at this stuff. Because if our digging around in archives has taught us anything, it’s that derealization, that erasure and erosion of history and reality, is constant. What gets buried, or retracted, or forever prefaced with “alleged” “identified as” or “perceived as,” what gets endlessly converted into symbolic metaphor instead of flat statement... it’s here all the time, and it affects us. I do believe that an objective reality exists, though I dunno that any one human can perceive it, but what becomes “history” and what becomes irrelevant footnotes is about way more than that objective truth. It’s so much harder than that (or the reverse of believing whatever damn fool thing your brain tells you no matter what).

We’ll probably post more about this book; I think Rogan was like, “I’ll do one big post when I’m done,” but there are so many angles and things to pursue in this book, that ain’t gonna happen. I didn’t even TOUCH the Mapuche concept of multitemporality and how it’s affected our ideas on memory work yet!

Okay, I know there are folks who do Font Stuff and I am at my wits end so I throw myself on y'all's mercy. I have a couple fonts. One, Hershey Noailles Old French 2.5, is a bold version of the other, Hershey Noailles Old French.

And I CANNOT FOR THE LIFE OF ME get my computer to see that. At first, it insisted they were two completely different, unrelated fonts, so I popped them into FontForge, renamed them to have the same family and named one Hershey Noailles Old French with weight Regular and the other Hershey Noailles Old French Bold with weight Bold. That at least got my computer to go, "Ah, I see, these are indeed the same family, one is bold and one is regular!" which is great... but now my computer insists that the two fonts are identical. I do not know why, they very clearly are not when I open them individually in Font Forge... but they show up as identical in Font Viewer too! And any time I try to use it, I get the bold face, and I cannot get the regular one.

I am giving up for now but ARGH. (And all of this could've been avoided if the font distributor had just NAMED THEM RIGHT IN THE FIRST PLACE!)

Of the nations whose joining processes We know about, all have some form of initiation ritual. Judaism and the United States, namely, both require that a potential initiate receive education, demonstrate their understanding, and have membership conferred upon them. If one is to create a new nation, then, it follows that they must initiate themselves. This journal is Our initiation.

We are faeries, some of Us say. We look, and often act, human. We blend in with human society. But a closer look betrays the truth. A faerie, contrary to the current pop-culture idea of a small human with insect wings, may take many forms. A faerie could be a dragon, a tree, a star, perhaps nearly anything one could imagine. And, I say "some of Us" because We do not all agree with this line of thinking. We do all agree that We externally appear human, but We do not agree that this makes Us faerie. The same applies to Our ideas of the gods. Some of Us believe they are creations of mortals; others believe they predate mortals.

Crazy Boys Get Money (D Stories)
Summary: Two teens in Texas hook and heist their way out of danger. True story.
Series: LB autobio (D Stories)
Word Count: 8100
Notes: Winner by a long shot of the February fan poll. Depending on how this story is received, I’ll be pulling out more regarding this period of my life, a series called “the D Stories.” Normally I would break it into 3 installments, but due to the nature of the content, I have chosen to upload it all at once. I feel professionally obligated to disclaim that this story is not appropriate for anyone under 18… but this was my life when I was younger than that, and it's both insulting and degrading to say that my youth is unspeakable to the very age demographic it happens to.
Content warnings for anti-black racism; coerced, underaged, bad sex work, and (separate) consensual, okay teenage sex, along with the circumstances surrounding both. More information is in the comments.

A Minecraft villager knows what a player is. It knows what a zombie is. It knows what lava is. It knows about time, emeralds, information exchange. It cares about all of these things, as much as a computer program is capable of caring, anyway. A language model cannot care, because it cannot know. Language models do not go deeper than the Unicode we use to represent information. They cannot know the information itself. Testificates are AI. ChatGPT is not. -🦜

I belong to a feathered people. We have cloacae and little reproductive difference. Whosoever wishes to lay eggs might do so. Whosoever wishes to produce sperm might do so. That means we don't have any concept quite like human sex/gender. We certainly have individuals whose personal sense of style aligns more with my human cultural ideas of masculinity or of femininity or of androgyny. Don't mistake them for men or women though.

It's funny—I'm Grian, but that has less to do with my life in EVO and Hermitcraft and more to do with what "Grian-ness" represents to Us: avian humanity, casual and flexible masculinity, Minecraft prowess, storytelling, bringing people together, a penchant for harmless trolling, the scary side of therianthropy and plurality, a connection to the divine.

We perceive gods. An athiest does not. Neither& of us are wrong. Gods exist in our perception and in a space outside of perception or lackthereof. The truth value of a god's existence is not comparable to that of anything tangible. A god is a social construct that retroactively creates its own history. Gods, existing in a realm outside our own, are more real than anything tangible. They predate us and will outlast us. Men create gods. Gods create men. All is chicken. All is egg.
Explanatory note: there is a later entry that explains this paragraph's contradictions.

Many act as if basic decency—not being racist, not bullying, seeing fascism for what it is, sharing instead of hoarding, etc.—is the greatest virtue there is. While a person who learns decency after being taught only dishonor should be encouraged, these sorts of behaviors are only the first step. Real improvement comes not from recognizing that there is violence and dishonor, but from concrete planning and action that leaves room only for honor and justice. We often see people behaving this way online. They take such gradeschool knowledge as "Do not bully" or "Do not be bigoted" for profound, revolutionary wisdom. We seek true change to Our world—change for the better—but are met only with repetition of the same simple knowledge over and over. Even an in-person talk We recently attended showed similar problems.
Clarifying notes: We do expect this kind of behavior from children—they're still learning—but We see it all too often from adults as well. That's the real problem We're trying to get at.

We need to tell others about the tribe—especially those who seem to feel the call as well. That is the first sort of person who belongs. It seems that they are especially receptive to the ideas and that they dream big. There will be other sorts of people who shall reveal themselves. Keep an eye out always for them. We shall be lovers, we shall be dreamers, and the world we build together shall be right here, on the far side of the rainbow.

We've been getting visions. We are a wolf running through a forest. We are a wolf running down into a vast, grassy valley. It is overcast, perhaps drizzling. This valley is, or was, or will be, a battlefield. Sometimes Our pack is there and sometimes they are not. The forest is joyful. The valley is beautiful but dangerous.

The veil is not a barrier between this world and a separate, more magical world. It is a mental barrier that prevents you from seeing the fullness and magic of this world. There is magical potential in all things. Europe's Enlightenment period separated magic from science. It is our duty to restore their bond. The veil will not fall all at once in some great cataclysm. It will happen bit by bit: person by person, community by community. You must rend the veil in your head and help others rend theirs. There is no higher world or power that can save us all at once. We must build Heaven on Earth, together. While there are almost certainly gods & spirits and heavens & hells in some form or another, it is not they who have the capacity to reshape our societies. It is only us.
